I honestly tink that it would be polite and petite
I bought my boyfriend’s child a present before meeting her, and then always got her little gifts for her birthdays and Christmas etc. I think it’s a nice thing to do. It can be difficult for a child to see his/her Daddy with someone new, and it can break the ice a bit.
Save the gift until you know you will actually meet the child, and it is perfectly acceptable to give them a memento for the occasion.
