We have a girl, age 6, and a boy, age 4. They still have their stuffed animals. My girl has dolls (vinyl baby dolls) as well as some of the fancier dolls and their clothes, some Build-A-Bear, and small plastic Fisher-Price type play sets of animals, as well as My Little Pony and Littlest Pet Shop toys.
My boy has Mega Blocks, Thomas toys of various sizes/configurations, and various Matchbox/Hot Wheels cars. Broken toys and outgrown toys have already been purged.
I am sick of being the ONLY one picking them up and putting them away. They’re not my toys for heck’s sake and it’s so tiring forcing my way in there. Discipline is hard since I’m sooo tired these days! My husband is tired of most of them and wants all but the kids’ top 10 (whatever number is fair) toys to charity.
I will be organizing the toy area and making it into a tv viewing room so we can get the kids DVD’s and music in there and get back our living room and stereo! The old crib is going to be a daybed.

Your children should be putting their own toys away. Involve them in the purging process and let them know that you are sending all but their very favorites to little boys and girls who don’t have any toys – your husband’s number of 10 is a good one and and easy number for the kids to understand. Then after the purge is complete, make a rule that only 1 toy is to be out at a time, that when they’re done playing with a toy, it is to be put away.
The best rule of thumb for all occasions for every member of the family.. is
if u don’t eat it…… wear it …….or use it ……..or play with it
…..in one years time.. it needs to go out the door..
it is taking up valuable space..
and just getting old.. and perhaps some one else can be getting use from it..
take care
