My best friends, son’s first birtday is coming up and I don’t know what to get him? He will get everything he’ll ever need from his grandma and great-aunt. Clothes won’t be special (he has TONS!), toys, he isn’t really interested in. Is it really in appropriate to get a gift card? I’m really close to him and I don’t want him to look back and think, “Aunt Samantha got me a gift card for my first birthday.” :-/

it won’t last too long but you can get an engraved ID bracelet….put his name (or a special nickname you have for him) on the front and “HAPPY 1ST BIRTHDAY” on the back
why not get the gift card & write a note on the card that Aunt Samatha will take him shopping” wait until after the party then take him shopping and walk down the toy aisle and whatever he gasps at get it.
When my daughter turned one last year, I wished that she had gotten more money as gifts. I have started a college account for her and the more money I can deposit into it, the better it will be.

That is a toughie. Me personally.. I wouldnt mind having my child recieve a gift card… they always like to pick things out themselves… but he is one… will your friend be offended? I think a gift card is a good idea. He isnt going to remember his first birthday so he isnt going to care what you get him… and if there is something he didnt get or needs his mom can get it on the card!!! Go for the Gift Card!!
Something that involves time and thought. Remember, kids at that age are pretty simple, and the things that impress them aren’t the things you would think of.
One great gift for toddlers is the “Giant Building Blocks” present. You take cardboard boxes, sized so one fits inside another. Cover with brown craft paper (use wallpaper paste or spray-on adhesive – put a tarp on the floor first). Using permanent markers, draw bricks or stone blocks or wood slats on it. Kids can use this to make a fort or castle (and little kids can do that with adult help). Inside the smallest box (one too big for him to shove in his mouth) you put a gift certificate for the local zoo, or ice cream parlor.
Then you make a date to take him out. Mom and Dad welcome to come or not. You bring a camera and take photos of the outing (“this is you seeing the bears, this is you getting ice cream all over your face”). You give him the photos later in a simple scrapbook (one a kid can lift). On the cover, you write “Benny’s Book” (or whatever his name is).
The boxes work up until a kid is about seven – you use bigger boxes. For a one-year-old, you want light cardboard boxes big enough so he can’t get them in his mouth, but not too big to handle – think the size he can wrap his arms around.
One thing about the boxes – you don’t use them without adut supervision. Little kids will chew on the most surprising things….
You could start a scrapbook for him. You could ask your best friend for some photos of him (it won’t be a surprise obviously but it’s something that he will cherish when he gets older). You could also write a little note to him inside the front cover that says “happy birthday” or something like that so he will know who it’s from when he gets older.
