Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters by John Steptoe is a beautifully illustrated folktale from southern Africa. I have the hardcover edition and take pains to keep it in good condition. It tells the story of a villager who has two daughters he sends to the King who is choosing a wife. Although all agree both are beautiful, one daughter is nice and the other is not so nice. The sisters have an interesting journey and justice does prevail. The reading level is for ages 4 – 8, but you will have fun reading the story to younger children as well and marveling together over the pictures.
My son and I stumbled across the Fisher-Price online games and activities website. For over an hour, we played the games online for toddlers and infants. What was cool was that most games are set up where your little one can push any key on the keyboard and get a visual and sound reaction. Some games are peek-a-boo style learning games where animals pop up and make sounds, others feature ABCs and 123s. He particularly liked the coloring games, where pushing keys would color in a scene. He also got hooked on the ABC games, making the game sing the ABC song over and over again while he worked to keep up. Overall, it was fun for both of us and is a site I am bookmarking to return to often.
