Did you get a new Wii for your family or for a child in the family this holiday season? You’ll find discounts of 10% off all top videogame accessories and up to 25% off select video game accessories from now through January 16, 2010. After watching my 3 year-old impress the whole family with his coordination, decisionmaking and other video game skills, I think there is some merit to the notion of video games as educational toys.

It’s a little dated (way back in 2002), but I came across a news item from BBC News about a study that showed simulation and adventure games like Sim City and RollerCoaster Tycoon develop kid’s strategic thinking and planning skills, along with math, spelling and reading skills. The study was done by a group called Teachers Evaluating Educational Multimedia (Teem) working for the UK Department for Education. What do you think? Have you found any video games that were both fun, involve the family, and encourage or improve learning? Or, do you prefer old-fashioned pretend play?
